IASTM – Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage
A precise tool for faster recovery and long-term change
IASTM uses specialised tools to address deep, stubborn areas of tension or restriction that may not respond fully to hands-on techniques alone. It can be particularly useful for old scar tissue, long-standing injuries, or areas where movement feels limited and tissues feel stuck.
This approach helps improve circulation, support tissue remodelling, and restore smoother movement where needed.
At Bow Fitness, IASTM is one of many tools used selectively and intentionally, based on your individual history and how your body responds during treatment. It’s often a helpful option when recovery feels like it’s plateaued.
IASTM – Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage FAQ
What is IASTM?
IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage. It involves using specialised tools to help release tension, improve tissue glide, and stimulate the healing response in muscles and fascia. The tools allow for a more focused and efficient approach to soft tissue work, especially in areas that are stubborn or hard to access with hands alone.
Why would you use a tool instead of hands?
Sometimes a tool can provide more precision, better feedback, and allow for deeper or broader contact depending on the area being treated. It’s especially helpful for detecting and addressing areas of restriction, scar tissue, or chronic tightness. That said, it’s just one option, I only use it if it genuinely adds value to your treatment.
Does IASTM hurt?
It shouldn’t be painful. Some areas may feel more sensitive, especially if there’s restriction or irritation present, but I always work within your comfort level. You might feel some mild soreness afterwards (usually no more than 24–48 hours), but many people feel looser and more mobile right after treatment.
Will it leave bruises or marks?
Not usually. While some redness or temporary marking can occur due to increased circulation, the goal isn’t to bruise the tissue. I apply pressure mindfully, adapting to your body’s response in real time.
Is this something you include in every session?
No, like all techniques at Bow Fitness, IASTM is used only when it’s appropriate and aligned with your treatment goals. If we use it, it will be explained clearly and tailored to what your body needs on the day.
