Dry Needling
Targeted relief for stubborn pain and tightness
Dry needling is a targeted technique using fine, sterile needles to release muscle tension, calm nerves, and support healing. It’s often used for persistent pain, tightness, or training-related issues that haven’t responded to other treatments.
It’s one of several tools we may use, but it’s never essential. If it’s not right for you, we’ll use other hands-on methods to achieve similar results.
At Bow Fitness, every session is tailored to your body and goals. We’ll always talk through your options and make sure you’re comfortable with the approach we take.
Dry Needling FAQ
What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a targeted technique that uses fine, sterile needles to release muscular tension, calm irritated nerves, and support the body’s natural healing processes. It’s commonly used to treat tight or overactive muscles and is especially effective for stubborn areas that haven’t responded to stretching, massage, or exercise alone.
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. While both use similar needles, dry needling is based on Western medical principles and focuses on musculoskeletal dysfunction. It’s used to release trigger points, improve mobility, and reduce pain by addressing specific areas of dysfunction in your muscles or nervous system. It is not based on traditional Chinese medicine or meridian theory.
How do you decide where to needle?
Unlike some approaches that follow a standard map of points, I take a more individualised path. The needling is based on what I find during your assessment and treatment — not just a set of pre-defined spots. I look at how your body moves, what’s not working well, and which areas are contributing to your symptoms. From there, I target the exact tissues that need support.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes, when performed by someone who is medically trained and well-versed in anatomy. I’m trained in clinical reasoning, red flag screening, and have a thorough understanding of the body, which allows me to use dry needling in a way that is both effective and safe. Your comfort and safety are always my top priority, and I’ll explain everything before we begin.
What does dry needling feel like?
Most people feel a quick pinch or dull ache as the needle enters the muscle. Some may experience a twitch response or a brief sensation of heaviness. These are normal and often a sign that the muscle is releasing. Any discomfort usually passes quickly, and many clients report feeling significantly looser or lighter afterwards.
Do you needle the face?
Yes, but only when it’s appropriate for the condition. I sometimes needle areas like the masseter and temporalis for jaw tension or TMJ dysfunction, and occasionally near the sinuses for congestion-related discomfort. This is done with care and precision, and always with your full consent and comfort in mind.
Is dry needling essential for treatment?
Not at all. Dry needling is just one of several tools I may use. While it can help some people feel better, faster, it’s not the right fit for everyone — and that’s completely fine. We’ll always discuss your options, and your treatment will be tailored to your preferences and needs.
